Saw the instructions, had to try it.
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth full sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around for the coolest book you can find. Use what's actually nearest to you.

The "L" and "R" marks should relate to the right- and left-hand side of the engine as it sits on the bike frame - not as it sits on your bench upside down."

Naked Parties, Alaskan Ferries, and Annoying Papers
Holy crap, our Naked Banquet house party was some hot stuff. Not only was the pirate theme great, but the wine, Caribbean food, and drinking songs over dinner were excellent. God bless Von Cramm for having such great Swedes. We all gave toasts/speeches, drinking from The Big Cup. At the end of it all, I helped Kristen start a bonfire in our new firepit (guess who built that? go me!). Oh, and the VC alums that came by were raucous and fun. One of them kept screaming "TAKE IT OFF!!!" before every toast by a housemember.

But the bonfire is where things got heady. Picture the 40-50 of us (30 housemembers plus guests), screaming, dancing, and (slowly) stripping, around a huge bonfire. Every other one of us has a whole bottle of wine to himself, and one of the alums laughs maniacally as he takes the leaf blower and aims it for the bonfire. Well... craziness. Let me tell you. Manu Chao, wine, bonfire, and leaf blower make for a crazy good time.

By the time everybody was in their underwear (except two naked guys and a couple topless girls), it was time for me to go. As for what happened next, it's anyone's guess.

I got my travel guide for Alaska today. Would you believe it, there are no roads from BC into southeastern AK? There's this whole untamed, unsettled, unmarked mountain range between AK and BC. So I have to change my route to head for either Bellingham, WA or Prince Rupert, BC. Turns out that it'll cost me $500 to ferry from WA, but only (is this the right word?) $250 to ferry from Prince Rupert. Oh, that's one way, by the way. And Prince Rupert is no easy town to reach. From the top of Idaho/Montana I'll be heading northwest into BC (through the border town Roosville!), and it's one long undivided road with towns few and far in between.

And yes, I did say ferry. http://www.ferryalaska.com/. It's the Alaska Marine Highway System. Yep. A state sponsored series of ferry routes along the coast.

I also spent maybe three or four hours planning my trip in great detail. I can now name every state, road, and town between here and the ferry in BC. Mostly state highways and the old U.S. Highway system. That's something of a relief. And I get to stop in Appleton, WI to see an old Deep Springer.

Papers suck. Especially when you just don't care. Typology is actually somewhat interesting, but right now I just don't care whether or not natural languages can causativize passives in a monoclausal structure.

But it's not so bad. I have that and an exam on the 18th. And a crossword puzzle. And then I'm done. Stick a fork in me.

Hmm... long post.

Stupid firepit. Also, wine!
At the request of my older brother, I'm updating my LiveJournal. And as he says, "you can't keep a LiveJournal and not update it. So update it. That way I can read about you." Ok. It used to be that folks had telephones and letters. But so it goes.

There's this firepit in my backyard that I've been rebuilding with some housemates of mine. We're doing this as part of our semester HIP (House Improvement Project, on which we're required to spend 8 hours). Thing is, I've recruited several people into this single HIP - for it is a large project - and nearly all of them have turned out to be lazy bums. I've put in my hours (and then some, let me tell you!), and only one of my recruits has done his required time. The two house officers on the project have their excuse ("We're not required to do a HIP - this is volunteer!" Yeah, well.... shuddup!), but the rest have been bums. Bums!

That's OK, though. 'Cause when this is done, it's going to rock some serious ass. The firepit before the project was basically a few stacks of lightly cemented, mostly broken cinderblock. Actually, when I say lightly cemented, I mean "nearly no cement". So we're building it up bigger, actually cementing it, and next semester I'm going to put red brick all around it for my next HIP. It will indeed be a nice firepit.

Here's something to try: Sherry and olives. Until last Tuesday I hated both Sherry and olives. I didn't get the concept of fortified wines. And I'm still a bit suspicious of Port. But I guess I just haven't seen a good food pairing for it. But sherry and olives are actually both good when you sip on one and nibble the other (Spanish green with pimento) after a hearty meal (steak with mushrooms, onions, red wine, mashed potatoes). Wow. Seriouly, though. Try it.

and so i've give in
Yep. I've decided to try blogging out for a time. Hopefully this won't be another one of those flings with writing, as has happened whenever I've tried my hand at diary-keeping. Maybe the fact that it's on a computer will help me keep going. God, that's sad. If I can do it on a computer, I enjoy it more? Well, typing is much easier on my hands anyway....

And for the record, I do not claim to have the level of artistic talent and the self-knowledge necessary be come up with a "creative" and "expressive" username for my LiveJournal. Boo hoo.

Taking a queue from other livejournals I've read (which mostly seem to consist of "work sucked" rants and related rants), I shall now launch into a diatribe about.... ah crap, never mind.

About the most exciting thing for me right now is the motorcycle trip. If you're unaware, I'm planning to ride from Ithaca, NY to Moose Pass, AK on a motorcycle. It looks as though it'll be on the 450cc Honda, as I can't find anything larger that I can trade in for (a 750 would be perfect!). But things are looking up as far as planning goes. I just bought this /enourmous/ mountaineering backpack (4900 cu. inches) with an external frame, and I've been considering different ways to wire the external frame to some parts of my bike's frame.

If anybody has any flags, I'm looking to fly small (18 in. long) flags off the back of the bike as I ride. Specifically, I'm in the marked for Brazil, Mexico, US, Canada, and Texas flags.

Oof. Last night's swing dance was excellent. Jen taught me a couple aerial maneuveurs (which is super-easy with her, on account of her being incredibly tiny and lightweight), which rocked my sock. Too bad Elz couldn't be there. And I'm rather glad, actually, that turnout was so low - it allowed for more dancing space, which we really needed.

Anyway, it's midnight, I have class, and I can still feel soreness in my shoulders from flipping girls around all night.
